Ukraine Strikes Russian Interior as Russia Targets Black Sea Shipping

Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed massive drone strikes across Russian regions while the Russian Ministry of Defense targeted over 80 Ukrainian supply ships in the Black Sea.

Military conflict escalated in early August 2026 through reciprocal strikes targeting critical infrastructure and logistics. Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed a massive overnight drone campaign against Russian soil, stating that Ukraine was "taking the war back to where it had come from." The operation targeted the Engels strategic bomber airbase, a Saratov oil refinery, a Kaluga oil depot, and a Wildberries logistics warehouse in Samara to disrupt the Russian consumer economy. These strikes killed at least eight people across Engels, Udmurtia, and Belgorod, including a child.

Simultaneously, the Russian Ministry of Defense conducted an extensive maritime operation in the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, targeting over 80 ships to sever Ukrainian military supply lines. Using Geran-4 Seeker, Gerbera, and Lancet drones, Russian forces hit tankers, ferries, and dry cargo ships, including the sinking of the Golden Leo in Odesa. Russia also struck infrastructure in the ports of Mykolaiv and Chornomorsk, while launching glide bombs into residential areas of Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv.

Russia claimed to have intercepted 635 Ukrainian drones during the overnight assault. In response to the maritime blockade, the Ukrainian government is considering alternative agricultural export routes via the Danube river to Romania, as 90% of its grain and oilseed exports rely on southern ports. Zelenskyy further noted a critical shortage of US-supplied Patriot missiles necessary to defend against Russian ballistic attacks.
