Trump Gold Coins Miss July 4 Semiquincentennial Deadline

The U.S. Mint confirmed commemorative gold coins featuring President Trump will not be ready for the July 4 Semiquincentennial due to production delays.

Donald Trump will not appear on commemorative 24k gold coins in time for the United States Semiquincentennial on July 4, 2026. A legal filing by the U.S. Mint confirms the project remains in the design stage and awaits final approval from the Treasury Department, making it impossible to meet the Independence Day milestone.

April Stafford, director of the office of design management at the U.S. Mint, detailed the production timeline in the filing. Once a design receives Treasury approval, it will take six to eight weeks to begin striking the coins, with full production estimated to require several additional months. As a result, the coins may not be available until December 2026 or early 2027.

The limited edition series consists of 47 coins, each containing approximately $90,000 worth of gold. The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts has already approved a design depicting Trump in a suit and tie. The delay follows a lawsuit by James Rickher, who argued that depicting a living president on currency violates U.S. law. The claim was rejected based on historical precedents, but the legal challenge contributed to the extended timeline.

The missed deadline means the coins will arrive months after the national celebration they were intended to commemorate, diminishing their connection to the Semiquincentennial observance.
