Speaker Mike Johnson Campaigns for Greg Cunningham in New Mexico

U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson visited Albuquerque on Wednesday to campaign for Republican Greg Cunningham in the race for New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District. During a news conference at Rio Bravo Brewing Co., Johnson praised Cunningham's background as a Marine veteran and former police officer, framing the contest as a key battle for Republicans to retain control of the U.S. House.

Johnson and Cunningham met with state law enforcement leaders to discuss border security, public safety, and the economic impact of crime. Cunningham, who has the endorsement of President Donald Trump, emphasized his law enforcement experience as a primary qualification for addressing these issues.

Incumbent Democratic U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez responded by arguing that Johnson's visit validates Cunningham's alignment with Donald Trump over the needs of New Mexico voters. The Democratic Party of New Mexico and Vasquez's campaign manager, Patricia Socarras Santiago, criticized the visit, claiming Cunningham prioritizes a MAGA agenda involving healthcare cuts and ICE raids over local interests.

While Cunningham has raised significant funds, financial reports from June indicate Vasquez maintains a cash-on-hand advantage with over $3.7 million. The general election is scheduled for November 3.
