Trump Blames Minnesota After Cyberattacks Hit Water Systems

Federal authorities are investigating a series of cyberattacks targeting water and wastewater systems in at least seven U.S. states, including Minnesota, Michigan, and South Dakota. The attacks targeted internet-connected programmable logic controllers, causing water pressure loss, flooding, and temporary plant outages in locations such as Braham, Minnesota.

While the FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency warned that Iranian hackers have been targeting critical infrastructure, the FBI has not definitively named a culprit for these specific disruptions. During a Cabinet meeting at Camp David, Donald Trump disputed the link to Iran and attributed the failures to the government of Minnesota and Governor Tim Walz.

Governor Walz countered the president's claims, stating that the attacks represent modern warfare and that the president knows who is responsible. Experts suggest the systems were vulnerable due to weak credentials and industry resistance to federal cybersecurity regulations.
