Germany Probes Russian-Linked Drones at Airport and Military Base

German security forces are investigating a series of drone incursions targeting critical infrastructure and military sites. On August 5, an employee at Leipzig/Halle Airport discovered a drone equipped with explosives and a detonator near Ukrainian transport aircraft. During the subsequent airport shutdown, a DHL cargo plane collided with another unidentified flying object, sustaining minor damage before diverting to Hanover.

Alexander Dobrindt, the German Interior Minister, characterized the airport incident as a professional hybrid attack and a new level of danger. While the German government has not publicly named a perpetrator, U.S. intelligence has linked the explosive drone to the Russian government. In response, Chancellor Friedrich Merz convened a national security council meeting to address vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure.

The security situation escalated between August 7 and 8, when multiple drones were detected over a high-security underground arms depot in Mechernich. The facility is the only site in Europe responsible for maintaining U.S. Patriot air defense systems. Investigators identified one aircraft as a Fly-380 VTOL model capable of carrying a 10 kg payload.

The Russian Embassy in Berlin dismissed the events as a fabricated provocation orchestrated by Ukraine and European militarists to justify financial support for Kyiv. Minister Dobrindt has since warned that Germany is a daily target of hybrid warfare and announced plans to expand domestic drone research to improve detection and counter-drone systems for military installations.
