Oil Prices Surge as US Treasury Yields Hit 2007 High
Brent crude oil prices exceeded $108 a barrel following a Saudi pipeline closure, triggering inflation fears and volatility across US Treasury and cryptocurrency markets.
Brent crude oil prices rose approximately 2% to exceed $108 a barrel after the closure of a critical Saudi pipeline. Chevron CEO Mike Wirth warned that global supplies are running low, intensifying concerns over inflation. This supply pressure coincided with a spike in U.S. Treasury yields, with the 10-year Treasury reaching 5.04%, its highest level since 2007.
Market volatility extended to the cryptocurrency sector. Bitcoin fell below $76,000 and Coinbase shares dropped 10% after the United States Senate rejected a bill that would have removed most crypto trading from the oversight of securities regulators. In a separate development, the cryptocurrency exchange CoinEx announced its shutdown.
Investors now anticipate that Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh may raise interest rates during the Federal Open Market Committee's decision this Wednesday. The potential hike aims to combat inflation driven by a prolonged war with Iran, new tariffs, and supply chain strains related to artificial intelligence.
