U.S. Sanctions Canadian ICC Judge Over Afghanistan Probe

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced economic sanctions on Wednesday against Kimberly Prost, a Canadian judge on the International Criminal Court (ICC). The measures prohibit Prost from entering the United States, allow for the seizure of her U.S. assets, and prevent U.S. firms from conducting business with her.

Rubio justified the sanctions by claiming the ICC has unfairly targeted the United States and Israel, specifically citing Prost's authorization of an investigation into American forces in Afghanistan. In response, the ICC stated it would defend its judges and continue its mandate despite the pressure.

Canadian officials reacted sharply to the move. During a meeting in Washington on Thursday, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand raised her discontent with Rubio. Canada's ambassador to the United Nations, Bob Rae, described the sanctions as a disgraceful attack intended to intimidate the international legal system. While Rubio's office focused its official statements on other geopolitical issues including Haiti, Gaza, China, and Ukraine, the dispute over the ICC's judicial overreach remains a point of contention.
