Japan Marks Hiroshima Anniversary Amid Military Buildup Disputes

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi attended the 81st anniversary ceremony of the Hiroshima bombing on August 6, 2026, at the Peace Memorial Park. Alongside representatives from 123 countries and regions, the Japanese government observed a moment of silence at 8:15 a.m. and updated the victims' register to include 353,639 individuals. Japan renewed calls for the global elimination of nuclear weapons, citing the February expiry of the New START Treaty and the failure of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Review Conference in May.

The commemorations coincided with intensifying internal conflict over Japan's security policy. Atomic bomb survivors and activists from Nihon Hidankyo warned that the Takaichi administration is eroding Japan's postwar commitment to pacifism through increased defense spending and the relaxation of lethal weapons export restrictions implemented in April 2026. These shifts sparked a July 10 protest in Tokyo where approximately 27,000 people demanded an end to rearmament.

Prime Minister Takaichi and Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi defended the buildup, citing security threats from North Korea, Russia, and China. They specifically pointed to potential conflicts over Taiwan as a justification for reinforcing defense capabilities. Survivors, including Masashi Ieshima, argued that this path recreates an arms race that could lead to nuclear war.
