Former Officials Urge Tinubu to Suspend 2027 Election Campaigns
Former government officials called on President Bola Tinubu to suspend 2027 electioneering activities to prioritize tackling Nigeria's nationwide insecurity crisis.
Former government officials are calling on the Nigerian federal government to suspend all electioneering campaigns for the 2027 elections to prioritize the elimination of nationwide insecurity. The demand follows a violent attack in the Gako community of Plateau State, where gunmen killed a pastor and three family members.
Dennis Amachree, the former deputy director of the Department of State Services, urged President Bola Tinubu to exercise the political will necessary to end the crisis. Amachree claimed that insurgency has persisted for over 18 years because it is supported by a multi-billion naira criminal economy financed by powerful individuals inside and outside the government, specifically naming retired major generals in Zamfara.
Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi supported this position, arguing that the current security situation must be treated as a national emergency. Amaechi stated that meaningful elections cannot occur if citizens do not feel safe within their own communities.
