Democrats Lead Polls as Republicans Use Funding Edge

Democrats hold a significant lead in national polls ahead of midterm elections, while Republicans leverage a massive financial advantage to maintain congressional control.

National polls and the generic ballot show Democrats holding a significant lead ahead of the midterm elections, fueling expectations of a blue wave that could flip control of the Senate. To achieve this, the party must win four Republican-held seats, several of which are located in deep-red states that strongly favored Donald Trump in 2024.

Republicans are countering this momentum with a substantial financial advantage, outspending Democrats by approximately $650 million in general-election advertising. This includes a $320 million edge in tossup Senate races, supported by more than $276 million from Elon Musk for turnout operations. Republicans are also utilizing campaign tours by Donald Trump in red-leaning states to mobilize voters, despite his approval ratings hitting new lows.

Democratic strategists warn that expectations may be overheating due to structural challenges. Internal concerns persist regarding the unpopularity of the party brand and the performance of progressive candidates in key states. In response, the Senate Majority PAC has launched $1.2 million in advertisements in Mississippi as part of a broader effort to recruit and support candidates in challenging red-state environments.
