Democrats Flip House, Senate and Key Southern Governorships

Democrats won control of the U.S. House and Senate and flipped governorships in Texas and Georgia, marking a significant repudiation of President Donald Trump's policies.

Democratic candidates secured majorities in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate during the November 2026 midterm elections. Voters cited the rising costs of housing, groceries, and gas as primary drivers, with 89% identifying the cost of living as a crucial factor. The results serve as a referendum on Donald Trump, whose policies on tariffs and the war against Iran contributed to the shift.

In a series of historic gubernatorial flips, Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman elected governor in U.S. history after defeating Republican Rick Jackson in Georgia. In Texas, Gina Hinojosa defeated three-term incumbent Greg Abbott to become the state's first Latina governor. Democrats also flipped governorships in Ohio and Iowa. Conversely, Republicans found success in Florida, where Byron Donalds was elected as the state's first Black governor.

The Senate saw further Democratic gains, including a flip in South Carolina where Annie Andrews defeated Darline Graham, and a victory for Roy Cooper in North Carolina. Other historic firsts included the election of Abdul El-Sayed as the first Muslim U.S. Senator and Chris Pappas as the first openly gay man in the Senate. Hakeem Jeffries is set to become the first Black Speaker of the House.

Republican losses occurred despite record spending, including an estimated $450 million from Elon Musk to support candidates like Ken Paxton, who lost his Senate race to James Talarico. President Trump criticized Greg Abbott on Truth Social, claiming the Texas governor lost because he had become a RINO.
