Sam Altman to Brief UN Security Council on AI Safety
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will brief the UN Security Council in New York to discuss international safety standards and the risks of uncontrolled AI development.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will brief the United Nations Security Council in person next Wednesday during the UN General Assembly's High-level Week in New York. The meeting, organized and chaired by the French Republic through Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Nol Barrot, focuses on artificial intelligence and international security.
Altman intends to present the safety measures OpenAI is implementing and advocate for shared international safety standards to prevent malicious misuse. This briefing follows a series of warnings from industry leaders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis, who have called for a coordinated slowdown in AI development to ensure the technology does not evolve beyond human control.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has supported these concerns, calling for a coordinated global effort to keep AI transparent and accountable. However, the push for oversight faces political opposition, as President Donald Trump has dismissed warnings about AI risks as a "hoax" and opposed tighter regulations. The Security Council previously addressed these issues in 2023, when the United States and China raised concerns regarding uncontrolled technological growth and repression.
