Thailand and China Establish Security Dialogue Amid Cambodia Tension

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul conducted an official visit to China from July 16 to 20, 2026, meeting with President Xi Jinping in Shanghai and Premier Li Qiang and Chairman Zhao Leji in Beijing. The two nations committed to building a China-Thailand community with a shared future, signing 15 agreements covering artificial intelligence, aerospace, nuclear fusion, and trade. A primary outcome was the establishment of a 2+2 dialogue mechanism involving their respective foreign and defense ministers to coordinate security and foreign policy, with Thailand offering to host the first meeting.

During the visit, Charnvirakul raised diplomatic concerns with President Xi regarding China's delivery of 39 T-59D battle tanks to Cambodia. Thai officials stated that the delivery and Cambodia's reporting of it risk undermining a fragile ceasefire following deadly border clashes in 2025. While China maintained its defense cooperation is normal, President Xi urged a peaceful resolution to the border dispute through dialogue.

Economically, both nations agreed to accelerate the China-Thailand high-speed railway, with Thailand targeting the completion of the first phase from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima by 2030. The leaders also pledged to intensify joint efforts to combat cross-border crimes, specifically online gambling and telecom fraud. Throughout the talks, Charnvirakul reaffirmed Thailand's adherence to the one-China policy and opposition to Taiwan independence.
