Canada to Table 2026 Federal Budget on November 5

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced the 2026 federal budget date amid disputes over infrastructure spending and rising public debt charges.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced that the federal Liberal government will table its 2026 budget on November 5. This marks the second budget under Prime Minister Mark Carney and the second consecutive budget delivered in the fall following the government's transition to a fall budgetary cycle last year. The announcement follows a spring economic update that projected a $65.3 billion deficit for the 2026-2027 fiscal year.

The budget arrives as Canada faces economic pressure from geopolitical instability in the Middle East and a reignited tariff dispute with the United States. Prime Minister Carney has shifted federal spending toward an aggressive infrastructure agenda, which has resulted in higher deficits.

Simultaneously, Parliamentary Budget Officer Annette Ryan released an updated economic outlook casting doubt on the government's ability to meet its fiscal anchors. Ryan predicts a balanced operating budget by 2028-29, one year later than the Liberal promise, and forecasts that public debt charges will rise to $83 billion by 2030-31. Conservative MP Melissa Lantsman criticized these projections, arguing that rising interest costs divert funds from essential services such as housing and healthcare.
