UK and France Bolster Border Security to Stop Channel Crossings

The UK Home Office reports increased effectiveness in stopping small boat crossings following a £661 million security deal with France.

French police recently clashed with migrants on a northern French beach, using pepper spray and knives to slash an inflatable boat. Drone footage released by the UK Border Security Command shows migrants throwing stones at officers during the interception. This incident follows a border security agreement reached in April, in which the UK provided £661 million over three years to strengthen operations in northern France.

Shabana Mahmood, the UK Home Secretary, stated that the deal is already disrupting criminal gangs and having a real impact. The Home Office reports that 61% of small boats have been intercepted since the deal, including 185 crossings involving 4,300 migrants over four weeks this summer. Overall crossings have decreased by approximately 40% compared to last year, and the Home Office noted that removals of criminals and immigration offenders have reached their highest level since 2016, with over 80,000 deported since July 2024.

Despite these figures, Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp dismissed the results as a joke, arguing that only a proper deterrent will stop the journeys. Meanwhile, the French Ministry of the Interior warned that proposals by Reform UK to intercept and return vessels without French consent would constitute a violation of French sovereignty. These developments occur as Prime Minister Andy Burnham vows to be relentless in stopping crossings following a peak arrival of 752 migrants on July 29.
