Kamala Harris Urges Global AI Safeguards in Seoul
Kamala Harris called for urgent international AI safeguards and US-China cooperation during a policy address in Seoul on October 14.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris urged governments and technology companies to implement artificial intelligence safeguards during an appearance at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies in Seoul on October 14. Harris warned that the window to contain existential risks, including AI-enabled weapons, cybersecurity threats, and systems escaping human control, is closing.
She advocated for cooperation between the United States and China to establish international AI standards, arguing that strategic rivalry should not preclude collaboration on shared risks. Harris emphasized that for guardrails to be effective, the necessary parties must be involved in the process.
Beyond technology, Harris criticized President Donald Trump for implementing erratic tariffs and called for a stronger US commitment to South Korea to counter the growing cooperation between North Korea, Russia, China, and Iran. While campaigning for Democratic candidates ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, Harris stated she is still considering a bid for the presidency in 2028.
