Rebeca Grynspan Leads UN Secretary-General Straw Poll

Rebeca Grynspan, the head of the UN Conference on Trade and Development, is the current frontrunner to become the first female Secretary-General of the United Nations. In a secret straw poll conducted by the UN Security Council, Grynspan received 10 encourage votes, four no opinion votes, and one discourage vote.

Her primary rival, former Guyana UN envoy Carolyn Rodrigues-Burkett, followed closely with nine encourage votes and two discourages. Other candidates, including former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, face significant opposition. The selection process follows an informal regional rotation system favoring Latin America as current Secretary-General António Guterres completes his second term on December 31, 2026.

Grynspan would be the first Jewish person to hold the post. During her tenure at UNCTAD, she led efforts to document the economic impact of Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories. The selection process is expected to conclude in October, requiring a recommendation from the Security Council and endorsement from the General Assembly.
