Islamic Clerics Urge President Tinubu to Drop 2027 Bid
Over 1,000 Islamic clerics demand President Bola Ahmed Tinubu withdraw from the 2027 race or reverse economic policies causing widespread hardship and insecurity.
More than 1,000 northern Islamic clerics have called on Bola Ahmed Tinubu to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race or urgently review his administration's economic policies. The demand followed a national conference in Kano on October 4, 2026, organized by Ko Da Naka for the Struggle to Promote Good Governance and Community Development and the AFAQ Educational Foundation.
In a communiqué, the clerics cited worsening insecurity, including terrorism, kidnappings, and killings particularly in North-West Nigeria. They criticized the removal of fuel subsidies, the floating of the naira, increased electricity tariffs, and tax reforms, arguing these measures have spiked unemployment and the cost of living while driving a brain drain of skilled professionals.
This opposition contrasts with recent endorsements of President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. The Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatis Sunnah and the Qadiriyya Sufi sect both backed the administration following consultations with Senator Abdulaziz Yari, the Director General of the All Progressives Congress Campaign Council.
