Israel Opens Public Shelters as US Intensifies Strikes on Iran

The Government of Israel has placed its security forces on high alert and opened public bomb shelters in Ramat Gan, Eilat, and Karmiel following an escalation in U.S. military operations against Iran. The move follows the U.S. Central Command's 12th round of strikes against Iranian targets, which included the first use of heavy bombers in the current campaign and the reinstatement of a maritime blockade on the Strait of Hormuz.

Israeli defense officials warned that increased American pressure raises the likelihood of Iranian retaliation against regional targets. Energy Minister Eli Cohen stated that Israel is on high alert for any scenario and argued that regime change in Tehran is necessary for regional stability. This escalation follows a cycle of conflict that began with a joint US-Israeli offensive in February 2026 and resumed last week after clashes over the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. President Donald Trump has further threatened to target Iranian national infrastructure, increasing the perceived risk of a direct Iranian response against Israeli territory.
