Republican Campaigns Spend $137 Million on AI Election Videos

Political campaigns spent over $137 million on AI-generated videos for the 2026 U.S. midterms, with Republican groups driving the vast majority of the spending.

Political campaigns have spent more than $137 million on 220 AI-generated videos ahead of the 2026 U.S. midterm elections. This represents a massive increase from the less than $50,000 spent on similar technology during the 2024 cycle. According to the Wesleyan Media Project, Republican campaigns and political action committees are the primary drivers of this trend, accounting for 88% of the total spending and 81% of the advertisements.

The report indicates that over 70% of these AI campaign videos lacked disclaimers. The technology has appeared in high-profile contests, including the Texas Senate race, where Republican Ken Paxton used an AI-generated depiction of Democrat James Talarico. In Pennsylvania, Republican candidate Stacy Garrity utilized AI-generated content to criticize Governor Josh Shapiro.

Reactions to the trend are divided. Some candidates argue that AI ads spread misinformation and mislead voters, while others claim the technology reduces production costs for those with limited budgets. Researchers warn that the proliferation of these ads may increase voter skepticism and create a general distrust of factual information during elections.
