BJP Wins By-Elections in West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry
The Bharatiya Janata Party and its NDA allies secured victories in multiple by-elections across West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry on October 9, 2026.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners won several by-elections across India on October 9, 2026. In West Bengal, the BJP secured the Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly seats. Candidate Hasi Rani Rath led in Nandigram by 164,427 votes, while Sakharav Sarkar won Rejinagar with 129,914 votes, significantly ahead of Aam Janata Unnayan Party candidate Golam Nabi Azad.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari attributed the success in West Bengal to welfare initiatives, specifically the Annapurna Yojana and pension schemes. He claimed these programs countered misconceptions among Bengali-speaking Muslims and women in minority communities. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar added that the results reflected public faith in the state government.
Beyond West Bengal, the BJP won the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam with candidate Devasish Sharma. In Puducherry, the NDA ally All India NR Congress won the Thattanchavady Assembly constituency. Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked voters for their support, stating the results demonstrate a "deep-rooted connect" between the public and the BJP-NDA governance agenda.
The elections, held on October 6, were triggered by various resignations and candidates winning multiple seats, including the resignation of Aam Janata Unnayan Party founder Humayun Kabir in Rejinagar.
