Arlington County Sues to Block Trump's Triumphal Arch
The Arlington County Board filed a federal lawsuit to stop the construction of President Donald Trump's proposed 250-foot triumphal arch in Washington, D.C.
The Arlington County Board of Virginia filed a federal lawsuit on Thursday to block the construction of a 250-foot triumphal arch proposed by President Donald Trump. Joined by the legal group Democracy Forward, the county alleges that the Trump administration and the National Park Service violated the National Environmental Policy Act by conducting only a cursory environmental review of the project.
The lawsuit argues the monument, planned for Memorial Circle in Washington, D.C., would obstruct the historic sightline between Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial. The board contends the project would clog emergency transport routes and increase noise and air pollution by diverting flight paths to Reagan National Airport. Additionally, the county cites public safety risks stemming from plans to use the arch as a military complex for drones, snipers, and ammunition storage.
While the Federal Aviation Administration released reports claiming no major impact to flight paths, the project continues to face opposition from veterans and preservationists. The administration plans to bring the proposal before the National Capital Planning Commission for a final vote on November 5.
