Nigerian Leaders Call for Unity on 66th Independence Anniversary

Nigerian officials marked the country's 66th Independence anniversary on October 1, 2026, with calls for national unity and resilience amid ongoing economic and social pressures. The Federal Government declared the anniversary a public holiday to commemorate the milestone.
Barau Jibrin, the Deputy Senate President, urged citizens to renew their faith in the Nigerian project and remain committed to building a secure nation. He called for peace and justice while encouraging Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. Jibrin stated that the National Assembly remains committed to providing the legislative framework necessary to address current national challenges.
Similarly, Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed of Bauchi State issued a goodwill message emphasizing collective responsibility. While acknowledging the rising cost of living and social pressures facing families, Mohammed argued that these challenges should not diminish hope for the future. He reaffirmed the Bauchi State government's commitment to improving the quality of life through investments in healthcare, education, agriculture, infrastructure, and digital transformation.
