Democrats Retake Congress as Donald Trump Concedes Midterm Defeat

President Donald Trump conceded the 2026 midterm elections after Democrats won resounding victories to retake control of both the House and Senate.

President Donald Trump conceded the 2026 midterm elections on Tuesday night, acknowledging that Democrats achieved resounding victories to retake control of both the House and Senate. Speaking on Fox News, Trump stated he would accept the results and congratulated the Democrats, marking a shift from months of legal challenges and threats of election interference.

Democratic candidates achieved several historic milestones during the cycle, including the election of the first Muslim senator, the first openly gay senator, and the first Black female governor. In Texas, Democrats swept key offices with the election of Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa and Senator-elect James Talarico. Keisha Lance Bottoms was elected as one of four Black governors.

Vice President JD Vance attributed the Republican losses to the war with Iran, a view echoed by Iranian officials. Trump attributed the defeat to his absence from the ballot. Prior to the vote, the United States Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security engaged in legal battles with states including California and Alaska over voter rolls and noncitizen voting, though most requests were rejected by federal courts.

On election night, Trump issued an executive order titled "The American Declaration of Freedom in Space" and proclaimed "Anti-Communism Week." He also claimed to have secured a permanent arrangement regarding Greenland, though Danish officials characterized the deal as maintaining the status quo.
