Turkmenistan Strengthens Ties With Russia and Tajikistan

President Serdar Berdimuhamedov of Turkmenistan engaged in a series of diplomatic efforts on September 22, 2026, to strengthen regional partnerships with Russia and Tajikistan. In a telephone conversation and a birthday letter, Russian President Vladimir Putin affirmed the strategic partnership between the two nations, emphasizing joint efforts to ensure security in Central Asia and the Caspian region. The leaders discussed parliamentary cooperation and the successful organization of Russia's State Duma elections.

Russia and Turkmenistan continue to collaborate on the International North-South Transport Corridor and the Volga-Caspian Canal. Bilateral trade between the two countries exceeded $1.6 billion annually, with a 21.4% increase recorded in the first quarter of 2025. Both nations are currently preparing for the 14th meeting of their bilateral intergovernmental commission to address finance, energy, and trade.

Simultaneously, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan held an international scientific and practical conference in Dushanbe to expand transport connectivity and economic ties. This event coincided with the 35th anniversary of state independence for both nations. Bilateral trade between Turkmenistan and Tajikistan grew by 17.1% in 2025, reaching $43.1 million. Cooperation efforts included the second meeting of the Turkmen-Tajik Business Council, focusing on agriculture, industry, and construction.
