Donald Trump intends to install a drone port atop a new White House ballroom, featuring armed troops and unmanned aerial vehicles equipped with missiles. The president is using this security initiative as a national security justification for the ballroom's construction and a proposed arch at Arlington National Cemetery.

The plan contrasts with current operations by the U.S. Secret Service, which already manages a surveillance-focused drone port on a nearby Treasury Department building. While the president envisions futuristic attack drones, the Secret Service utilizes smaller, unarmed Skydio drones for real-time situational awareness. This existing program was accelerated following a 2024 assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Critics argue the proposal militarizes the White House, and aviation experts have raised concerns regarding the de-confliction of commercial airspace. Despite these objections and ongoing legal challenges, the Supreme Court of the United States cleared construction to continue in August.
