Judge Defers Motion to Dismiss Trump's $15 Billion Defamation Suit

U.S. District Judge Steven Merryday deferred a motion to dismiss a $15 billion defamation lawsuit filed by Donald Trump against The New York Times Company and other defendants. The ruling allows Trump's legal team until August 27 to file an amended complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida.

The lawsuit alleges a decade of harassment, slander, and libel regarding Trump's business career, the reality show "The Apprentice," and various tax maneuvers. In addition to the news organization, the suit targets Penguin Random House and reporters Susanne Craig, Russ Buettner, Peter Baker, and Michael S. Schmidt. Specifically, the complaint cites the book "Lucky Loser," authored by Craig and Buettner.

Trump characterized the judge's decision as a failure by the news outlet to have the case dropped. A spokesperson for The New York Times maintained that the lawsuit has no merit and is an attempt to stifle independent reporting. Judge Merryday noted that a legal complaint should not serve as a public relations megaphone or a political podium.
