Indian Rupee Dips as US Announces Iran Sanctions

The Indian rupee settled lower against the US dollar on Monday as markets reacted to new US sanctions targeting Iran's oil and banking sectors.

The Indian rupee opened higher at 95.64 against the US dollar on Monday, August 24, 2026, but pared those gains to settle provisionally at 95.74. This decline of 3 paise from the previous close occurred despite robust capital inflows and a softer dollar.

Market volatility was driven by cautious sentiment following the announcement of a fresh round of sanctions by the United States government targeting Iran's shipping routes, banking network, and oil trade. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described these measures as the "toughest economic squeeze attempted against an adversary." President Donald Trump further intensified the pressure by threatening sanctions against any countries that continue to trade with Iran.

To stabilize the currency, the Reserve Bank of India mobilized nearly $73 billion through measures introduced in June, bringing foreign exchange reserves to $716.9 billion. However, the rupee's upside remained limited by persistent importer demand and elevated Brent crude prices. Analysts indicated that the currency remains vulnerable to geopolitical risks and the broader economic impact of the US sanctions on nations trading with Iran.
