India Extends $500 Million Credit Line to Guyana
India provided a $500 million line of credit to Guyana for infrastructure and digital projects following a meeting between S. Jaishankar and President Irfaan Ali.
The Government of India extended a $500 million line of credit to Guyana to fund public and defense infrastructure, specifically targeting roads, health, and defense projects. The announcement followed a meeting between Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Guyanese President Irfaan Ali on November 5, 2026, on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda.
Beyond the financial credit, the two nations signed three agreements focusing on the supply and installation of manufacturing projects for micro and small enterprises, grant assistance for Quick Impact Projects, and cooperation on digital public infrastructure. A central component of the digital pact involves implementing a payment system in Guyana modeled after India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
Jaishankar and Ali reviewed bilateral cooperation following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 2024 state visit to Guyana. The leaders also discussed expanding partnerships in energy, agriculture, trade, and investment to leverage Guyana's growing economic opportunities.
