Tinubu Orders EFCC to Unfreeze Osun State Bank Accounts
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed the EFCC to vacate a court order freezing Osun State bank accounts to avoid appearing to interfere in an upcoming election.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on August 6, 2026, to return to court and vacate an order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government. The EFCC had obtained the freeze order the previous day, August 5.
Tinubu stated he was "deeply embarrassed" by the timing of the agency's action, noting that it could create a false impression of federal interference in the Osun governorship election scheduled for August 15. He argued that no action should be taken that suggests the federal government is using anti-graft agencies to influence the democratic process.
While intervening to preserve public confidence, the president maintained that anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies must be allowed to discharge their statutory responsibilities independently and professionally, without political interference.
