Saudi-led Maritime Coalition Activates Joint Command Structure

The Saudi Ministry of Defense activated the joint command structure of the Multinational Maritime Defense Coalition following a third planning meeting in Jeddah. The coalition appointed Saudi Rear Admiral Abdullah bin Salem Al-Shehri as commander and designated that the first deputy commander will be provided by Pakistan.

Fifteen nations have signed the coalition's joint statement, with 13 having completed the domestic procedures required for formal membership. The alliance establishes a permanent defense framework designed to protect global supply chains, international trade, and freedom of navigation across the Red Sea, the Bab El-Mandeb Strait, and the Gulf of Aden.

Saudi officials characterized the coalition as defensive in nature and operating in accordance with international law. They stated the alliance does not target any specific country or organization, focusing instead on enhancing operational capabilities and readiness for defensive missions within its area of responsibility.
