Amit Shah Urges Promotion of Indian Languages at Rajbhasha Sammelan

Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the 6th All India Rajbhasha Sammelan and Hindi Diwas celebrations at the CIDCO Exhibition Centre in Navi Mumbai on September 14, 2026. Shah urged political parties to set aside differences to promote Indian languages, advocating for Hindi to serve as a link language that connects diverse regional tongues rather than competing with them.

Shah emphasized the government's goal to establish Indian languages as the primary mediums for science, governance, and competitive examinations, including the IAS and IPS. He defended the National Education Policy's mandate for primary education in mother tongues and the requirement for students to learn an additional Indian language to foster national unity. To support these efforts, the Ministry of Home Affairs developed the translation tool Bharati and expanded the Hindi Shabd Sindhu dictionary to include words from various regional languages.

During the event, Shah praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for granting Marathi classical language status and restoring the full version of the national song, Vande Mataram, to government functions. He noted that the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, now brings Vande Mataram under the protection of the 1971 Act. Shah linked the occasion to the start of Ganesh Utsav, expressing confidence that the deity would remove obstacles to the development of Indian languages.
