India Partners With Nvidia Corporation to Develop Sovereign GPUs

Ashwini Vaishnaw, India's Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, met with Nvidia Corporation officials including South Asia Managing Director Vishal Dhupar to coordinate the local manufacturing of edge devices and the development of sovereign graphics processing units (GPUs). The collaboration focuses on hardware like the DGX Spark, compact GPUs capable of 1 petaFLOP performance for models up to 200 billion parameters. Vaishnaw noted that these devices operate without internet access, making them "suitable for railways, shipping, healthcare, education, and remote applications."

This partnership is part of a government strategy to create native GPUs within three to four years. As part of the India AI Mission, the government has already deployed 38,000 GPUs and selected 12 domestic startups to build native AI engines. Prime Minister Narendra Modi previously chaired a roundtable with these startups ahead of the India AI Impact Summit 2026.

To support the broader ecosystem, the Government of India has established a $12 billion R&D fund. Simultaneously, the India Deep Tech Alliance secured more than $850 million in new capital commitments to support startups specializing in robotics, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence.
