India's Jan Dhan Scheme Surpasses 59 Crore Bank Accounts

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana marked its 12th anniversary with total deposits reaching Rs 3.17 lakh crore across 59 crore accounts.

The Ministry of Finance reported that the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) surpassed 59.09 crore bank accounts as it marked its 12th anniversary on August 28, 2026. Since its launch by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 28, 2014, total deposits in the scheme have increased 12.8 times to reach Rs 3.17 lakh crore.

As of August 19, 2026, the average deposit per account stood at Rs 5,356, representing a 3.4-fold increase over the last 12 years. The program has focused heavily on marginalized populations, with 77.8% of accounts located in rural or semi-urban areas and 55.7% owned by women. The government has issued 41.29 crore RuPay debit cards, which provide an overdraft facility of up to Rs 10,000 and Rs 2 lakh in accident insurance.

Officials highlighted the Jan-Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile (JAM) trinity as a diversion-proof mechanism that eliminates intermediaries to deliver welfare benefits directly to the underprivileged. Moving into its 13th year, the government plans to further expand digital payments and financial services for marginalized populations to deepen engagement with formal banking.
