U.S. Treasury Launches Quantum-Readiness Task Force for Finance
The U.S. Department of the Treasury established a task force to transition the financial sector to quantum-safe technology following an executive order by Donald Trump.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury established the Quantum-Readiness Task Force to help the financial sector transition to quantum-safe technology. This public-private initiative follows Executive Order 14412 issued by President Donald J. Trump, which set guidelines to strengthen cryptographic protections for the digital economy and critical infrastructure.
The task force aims to mitigate long-term cybersecurity risks, as future quantum systems could potentially break current cryptographic tools used to protect financial data, digital identities, and payment systems. The initiative will operate through three specific workstreams focusing on emerging technology risk, third-party vendor readiness, and sector alignment.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated the task force will ensure the financial system remains secure as technologies reshape the global landscape. Treasury Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions Luke Pettit added that the transition must be coordinated and risk-based. Deborah Guild, Chair of the Financial Services Sector Coordinating Council, characterized post-quantum cryptography readiness as a "present-day risk control rather than a future-proofing exercise."
