Xi Jinping Launches $20 Billion Robotics Leadership Plan

President Xi Jinping is investing $20 billion to establish China as the global leader in robotics and industrial automation to counter a shrinking workforce.

President Xi Jinping is implementing a $20 billion national strategy to establish China as the global leader in innovation and robotics. The initiative aims to create new productive forces by rapidly scaling industrial automation, a move designed to mitigate the economic impact of an aging population and a shrinking workforce.

China already produces more than half of the world's industrial robots and has deployed over two million units across its factories. To sustain this growth, the government is investing in specialized vocational training at institutions like the Hangzhou Technician Institute to develop a new generation of engineers. While the United States maintains a lead in the artificial intelligence software used to program robots, China holds a significant advantage in hardware manufacturing.

The transition presents a risk to approximately 120 million manufacturing workers, though government officials suggest automation will fill critical labor gaps by 2035. Companies such as Leapmotor have already achieved nearly 100% automation in several workshop processes, while CRP Technology has developed robotic arms capable of performing 90% of repetitive industrial tasks.
