U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced the upcoming release of the Milwaukee Framework, a new initiative designed to coordinate global action against excess steel production capacity. The framework will be introduced this week during a meeting of Group of 20 trade ministers.
The initiative encourages nations to implement stronger trade barriers and tariffs on steel imports from countries with significant overcapacity, specifically citing China. Greer stated that the United States has already taken robust measures and believes it makes sense for other countries to follow suit.
While Greer noted that every country will determine what it thinks is appropriate, the United States intends to use the framework to coordinate these international responses to stabilize the global steel market.
