Trump Administration Arrests 2,100 Immigrants in New York Operation

The Trump administration arrested more than 2,100 immigrants across New York between July 27 and August 29 as part of a monthlong initiative called Operation Rotten Apple. Markwayne Mullin, the Homeland Security Secretary, stated the operation targeted individuals convicted of serious crimes including murder, rape, and drug trafficking. However, data from United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement indicates that over 75% of those arrested in New York had no criminal convictions or pending charges.

The operation has intensified a conflict between federal authorities and Democratic leaders, including Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani, over sanctuary policies and New York's refusal to join the 287(g) federal enforcement program. Mayor Mamdani defended these policies as a way to ensure immigrants report crimes without fear of deportation.

Simultaneously, New York officials are criticizing the federal government for withholding $87 million in counterterrorism funding. While the administration linked the funding cuts to sanctuary policies, Governor Hochul characterized the reduction as political retaliation. Secretary Mullin has indicated that the federal government is prepared to deploy additional agents to New York to continue enforcement efforts.
