Parti Québécois Delays Independence Referendum Until After Trump Term

Paul St-Pierre Plamondon announced that the Parti Québécois will not hold a sovereignty referendum while Donald Trump is president of the United States.

Parti Québécois leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon announced Tuesday that if his party forms government in the upcoming Quebec provincial election, he will not hold a referendum on sovereignty until after U.S. President Donald Trump leaves office on January 20, 2029. This decision reverses a previous campaign promise to force a vote on separation, a centerpiece of the party platform since 2024.

Plamondon stated the delay is necessary to ensure a serene debate and prevent the process from being "hijacked by the upheavals of American politics" or the "outbursts of an unpredictable president." He argued that the move defuses claims that current economic tensions and U.S. tariffs make it the worst time for a vote. Despite the shift in timeline, Plamondon maintains that independence remains the only solution to avoid cultural and financial decline.

Political opponents criticized the move as an admission of geopolitical risk. Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette argued that delaying the vote merely spreads economic uncertainty over a four-year term, while Liberal leader Charles Milliard suggested that the risks of independence persist regardless of the U.S. presidency. Ruba Ghazal of Québec solidaire added that the independence project should not depend on U.S. leadership.

The announcement comes as the Parti Québécois leads in polls ahead of the October 5 election deadline, though general public support for sovereignty remains around 30 percent. The political climate is further complicated by similar separatist sentiment in Alberta, where voters will decide on October 19 whether to move toward a binding referendum on leaving Canada.
