General Motors Pledges Ontario Investment Amid Trump Tariff Threats

General Motors reached a tentative agreement with the Unifor union to assemble next-generation heavy-duty GMC Sierra trucks at its plant in Oshawa, Ontario. The deal includes a C$144 million ($104 million) investment in the Oshawa facility and a pledge from the company not to immediately sell or close a second assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario. The agreement covers 4,600 union members and currently awaits ratification.

This investment occurs as the Canadian automotive sector faces severe pressure from U.S. trade policy. Recent negotiations between Canada and the United States to reduce existing 25% tariffs on Canadian vehicles ended without a resolution. President Donald Trump has announced plans to increase tariffs on all Canadian cars, trucks, automotive parts, and steel to 50% effective January 1, 2027.

In response to these trade tensions, the Treasury Board of Canada stated it cannot accept a U.S. trade deal unless the agreement ensures the survival of the domestic auto industry.
