Democrat Brandon Dukes Flips Deep-Red Pennsylvania House Seat

Democrat Brandon Dukes won a special election in Pennsylvania's 12th District, flipping a Republican seat held since 1999 in a district that heavily favored Donald Trump.

Democrat Brandon Dukes won a special election for Pennsylvania's 12th state House district on August 18, 2026, defeating Republican Scott Timko. Unofficial results from the Butler County Bureau of Elections showed Dukes leading by 88 votes, with 8,434 votes to Timko's 8,346. The victory flips a seat held by Republicans since the 1990s in a district that Donald Trump carried by over 18 percentage points in 2024.

Dukes, a commercial loan administrator, attributed his win to a focus on local, practical issues such as infrastructure, affordability, and education. The special election was triggered by the March resignation of Republican Representative Stephenie Scialabba. If certified, the result expands the Democratic majority in the state House to 103-100.

Democratic leaders, including Governor Josh Shapiro, described the result as a political earthquake and a blueprint for winning over moderate voters. Republican House Leader Jesse Topper downplayed the loss, citing demographic shifts and the timing of the summer vote, while the Pennsylvania Republican Party called the result a wake up call regarding voter turnout and mail-in ballot usage. During the campaign, Timko faced scrutiny over reports that an associated LLC owed more than $42,000 in unpaid taxes, which he called a state administrative error.

Dukes will serve the remainder of the current term before facing Timko in a rematch during the November general election for a full two-year term.
