Gordie Howe International Bridge Opens Amid US-Canada Trade Tension

The Gordie Howe International Bridge opens to vehicle traffic on Monday, July 28, 2026, at noon. The new six-lane transportation link between the United States and Canada is designed to lower border patrol wait times and reduce congestion for passenger and commercial drivers. Pedestrian and bicycle access will follow several weeks after the initial vehicle opening.

Diplomatic friction marked the lead-up to the opening. Canada withdrew from a scheduled joint event with the United States and instead conducted its own separate ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday. This move followed the decision by President Donald Trump to impose a 50% tariff on specific Canadian goods.
