Texas Records Highest September Gas Prices on Record
AAA Texas reports record-setting September gasoline and diesel prices, prompting Governor Greg Abbott to declare a state disaster amid oil market volatility.
Texas experienced its most expensive September on record for regular unleaded gasoline, with a statewide average of $3.94 per gallon. This figure surpassed the previous September record of $3.63 set in 2012, although it remained below the all-time statewide peak of $4.69 reached in June 2022. Diesel fuel prices also hit a record high of $5.97 per gallon in September, leading Greg Abbott to declare a state disaster earlier this week.
Recent data shows a slight dip in costs, with average gas prices in Texas decreasing by 2 cents to $3.94 per gallon this week. Regional pricing varies significantly, with El Paso reporting the highest costs at $4.34 per gallon and McAllen reporting the lowest at $3.74.
AAA Texas attributed the price surge to elevated crude oil prices and volatility surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Market uncertainty persists after the United States government rejected a proposal from Iran to reopen the waterway, renewing concerns over potential military operations. While crude oil prices have recently eased back into the $90-per-barrel range, they remain historically high for the season.
