Andy Burnham Outlines Socialist Revolution at Labour Party Conference

Prime Minister Andy Burnham delivered a transformative address at his first Labour Party conference in Liverpool, outlining a "socialist revolution" designed to distance his administration from the leadership of Keir Starmer. Under the new slogan "Hope Again," Burnham proposed a sweeping agenda that includes the creation of a National Care Service providing free personal care for older people, funded by adjusting the state pension triple lock starting in April 2030. He also called for the public ownership of water companies and the launch of the largest council house building program since World War II.

Burnham's domestic reforms extend to the energy sector with the introduction of the Great British Grid, a publicly-owned body within Great British Energy. On the international stage, he stated that "Brexit has done more harm than good" and pledged to present options for the United Kingdom's long-term relationship with the European Union, including the possibility of rejoining the bloc.

Other government officials reinforced this shift toward state-led growth. First Secretary Louise Haigh committed to insourcing 1,000 Whitehall jobs and a new shipbuilding initiative, while Chancellor John Healey focused on reindustrialization through remilitarization. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting warned that the threat of war is currently at its highest level in his lifetime.

Reactions to the speech were polarized. While some media outlets praised Burnham's oratory, right-leaning publications condemned the plans as a return to a failed past. Stroud MP Simon Opher described the vision as emotional and radical, noting the government has two years to deliver these changes.
