Trump Administration Officials Warn of Iranian EMP Threats

Vice President JD Vance and other top Trump administration officials warn that Iran could trigger a national collapse via an electromagnetic pulse attack.

Top officials in the administration of Donald Trump, including Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, have promoted warnings that Iran poses a significant threat to the United States through an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack. These officials, supported by conservative activists and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, argue that a high-altitude nuclear detonation could destroy the U.S. power grid and critical infrastructure, potentially causing a national collapse.

This focus on EMP defense dates back to Trump's first term, during which he signed a 2019 executive order directing federal agencies to defend against such strikes. Despite the administration's subsequent military conflict with Iran, officials have not publicly cited EMP threats as a rationale for the war. CIA Director John Ratcliffe also previously advocated for improved electrical grid protections during his time in Congress.

Nuclear scientists have dismissed these alarms as unrealistic. Former Los Alamos physicist Stephen M. Younger stated that a successful attack would require a hydrogen bomb and precise environmental conditions that Iran likely does not possess.
