Allies Challenge Trump Claims on Hormuz Mine Clearance

Allied officials are privately challenging claims by Donald Trump that the U.S. Navy has completely cleared Iranian sea mines from the Strait of Hormuz. The president has repeatedly asserted that the mines are gone and the area is a functioning strait, a position intended to stabilize energy markets ahead of the November midterm elections.

Despite these assertions, allies believe many of the estimated 80 to 150 mines remain in the water, suggesting that sea currents have likely shifted their positions. The International Maritime Organization has urged seafarers in the region to exercise maximum caution. While the United States Central Command has reported the destruction of Iranian mine inventories, the operational reality remains contested.

Iran continues to threaten U.S. de-mining vessels, though Iranian and Omani foreign ministers have discussed establishing a temporary joint maritime corridor for clearance. The UK and France are currently planning a broader reassurance mission to be coordinated with U.S. military chiefs once a sustainable ceasefire is reached.
