Iran Threatens Retaliation as Trump Intensifies Economic Warfare

Mohsen Rezaei warned that Iran will target the interests of any nation joining U.S. economic sanctions, including blocking oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz.

Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Mohsen Rezaei warned on August 22 that any country participating in the United States' economic war against Tehran will be considered an enemy. Speaking on state television, Rezaei stated that while Iran would first attempt to negotiate, it would otherwise strike the interests of participating nations. He specifically threatened to block all oil exports from the Strait of Hormuz if surrounding countries join the U.S. siege, warning that a continued operation would trigger a response like an earthquake targeting American oil and economic companies.

These threats follow a campaign by President Donald Trump, who described the U.S. strategy as the most crushing economic operation ever intended to isolate the Iranian economy. The tension has already impacted regional trade, with the United Arab Emirates suspending all trade and financial transactions with Tehran on August 18. While China has criticized the sanctions, France and Saudi Arabia are now planning to discuss alternative trade and energy routes to bypass the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite the escalation, diplomatic efforts continue as Egypt attempts to revive negotiations between the United States and Iran. Simultaneously, Iran and Iraq announced that Tehran is facilitating the transit of some Iraqi oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz to maintain specific regional flows.
