Andy Burnham Announces £210 Million High Street Restoration Fund

Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced a £210 million funding package on September 25 to restore run-down high streets across England. Provided by the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government, the initiative aims to reverse the hollowing out of town centres and foster community pride.

The funding is divided into three primary streams. A £125 million Derelict Buildings Fund will create new civic spaces and health centres, while £65 million is earmarked to revamp businesses at risk of closure, including sports clubs and pubs. The remaining £20 million will support a Co-operative Development Programme and rental auctions for properties that have remained vacant long-term.

Coordinated by the Place Regeneration Taskforce, the initiative builds on the existing Pride in Place programme, which has already seen local takeovers of a youth centre in Ramsgate and the redevelopment of the Brunswick Shopping Centre in Scarborough. The government plans to publish a comprehensive high streets strategy later this year to further transform town centres.
