Andy Burnham Convenes Cross-Party Talks to Reform Social Care

Prime Minister Andy Burnham convened cross-party talks on Wednesday to address the adult social care crisis in England. Inviting representatives from the Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties, Burnham sought a spirit of collaboration to tackle a system he described as having been neglected by governments for decades because the issue was viewed as too complicated.

The meeting drew immediate criticism regarding its organization and inclusivity. Reports indicated that invited parties received only 18 hours of notice, and both Reform UK and the Green Party were excluded. Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, condemned the exclusion as a conspiracy to impose tax rises, while Green Party leader Zack Polanski urged the Prime Minister to expand the invitation.

Political tension focused on funding. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch challenged the Prime Minister to rule out borrowing or tax increases, subsequently sending shadow health secretary Stuart Andrew to the meeting in her place. Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey participated via Zoom from France, expressing hope that the call was a first step toward fixing the service. Simultaneously, Baroness Louise Casey launched the Big Conversation on Care to solicit public input on systemic reform. The Government has denied intentions to implement a death tax, a levy Burnham had proposed in 2010.
