USS Abraham Lincoln Returns After 260-Day Iran Deployment

The USS Abraham Lincoln is returning to San Diego following a nine-month deployment marked by supply shortages and disputes over crew mental health.

The USS Abraham Lincoln is returning to San Diego after more than 260 days of deployment in the Middle East. The aircraft carrier supported U.S. war efforts against Iran, including blockading ports and conducting flight operations. The extended mission was necessitated by a shortage of available carriers and the unavailability of safe bases in Bahrain, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates following Iranian attacks.

Reports from the ship describe severe hardships, including food rationing, supply chain disruptions, black mold, and plumbing failures. These conditions contributed to reports of low morale and suicide ideation among the 5,000 sailors and Marines. While families of service members claim multiple sailors attempted to jump overboard, Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao reported only a small number of mental health cases and no loss of life.

Government officials have dismissed the severity of the crisis. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that reports of poor conditions were misrepresented, and President Donald Trump suggested the deployment length was insufficient. Retired Admiral Mike Mullen expressed concern over the situation, noting that the lack of usable ports for rest and relaxation forced the crew to remain at sea. The USS George Washington is currently en route to provide relief to the crew.
